We got a hotel room at the beach and just had a great time! We’ve done it each year since. It’s just wonderful to have nearly a full weekend together, collecting shells, running along the beach and wandering the board walk in search of dinner (or dessert!) We also like to Kitterbug at the beach. Newport Beach is one of our favorite cities and beaches. As beautiful as the beach is, though, there is often A LOT of trash. I do experience tons of frustration and bewilderment at the beach. I just don’t understand how an entire family can walk away from their site on the sand and leave behind all their trash. Or, how kids can play right next to a huge piece of trash all day and not feel compelled to pick it up! I think the problem is a lack of knowledge. I don’t think many people really think about trash at the beach. I think they assume it just gets cleaned up at the end of the day. One of the goals behind Kitterbugs is to help educate the public about the impact trash has on all the places we enjoy. Please invite your friends to join and check out our site and Facebook page. The more opportunities we have to share our message, the less trash we will see!

During our Kitterbugging excursion this year, lots of people watched us, but no one said anything. I often wonder what they are thinking. Are people excited to see their beach become cleaner? Do they wonder why we do it? Do they think I’m punishing my daughter for some misbehavior? Our hope is that when they go to leave, later in the day, they will remember seeing us, and take all of their trash to the many receptacles available. If just two or three of the families that saw us would do what we do, what an amazing impact that would have!

Thank you for reading our blog and supporting Kitterbugs! If you have thoughts about how to help kids help the planet, please feel free to share with us!

Be well!

Traci (and the whole Kitterbug Family!)

What a wonderful Earth Day! It is a such a great reminder for us to take care of our world around us. How do we do that? By doing our part to make sure that garbage goes where it is supposed to. Trash finds its way all over the place when we are not careful. Parks, city streets, and even places like the lakes and oceans find garbage in them when we are careless not to put the garbage where it belongs. Just like on land, garbage effects not just the water, but also all the wonder creatures that live within it.

One of the most iconic children’s movies always comes to mind for us here at Kitterbugs on Earth Day. In Finding Nemo, Gil, the scrappy fish in the tank at the dental office says “All drains lead to the ocean.” This may be one of the best lessons in Finding Nemo (in our opinion, anyway!)

Kids, remembering everything that goes down a drain can end up on the ocean is SUPER important. Knowing, too, that many things end up in the ocean though, even if they don’t go down drains. One of these items is plastic bags. Every year our Kitterbug family visits the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida. At The Turtle Hospital, sea turtles of all kinds are nursed back to health, often after ingesting trash that ends up in our oceans. Turtles often mistake trash for their typical food (jelly fish, sea sponges, etc.)

Check out the Turtle Hospital website to learn more!

Don’t you just love birthdays? It’s your special day ALL. DAY. LONG!! People are nice to you – maybe your parents throw you a party! Maybe ALL your friends come and spend time with you laughing and playing! And, of course, there is cake and ice cream, or whatever your favorite sweet treat is! Last but not least, maybe there are presents! Something that someone picked especially for you because they know you so well. You end up wishing that your birthday was every day of the year!!

Wouldn’t it be great if we did that for the earth on Earth Day? Got all our friends together laughing and playing while giving one of the best gifts ever to the earth? Picking up trash ? Can you imagine? If every one picked up one piece of trash that day? Obviously, not everyone will. We can though! And if we pick up a whole bag of trash, it will make such a difference. Now, the earth can’t write a thank you note, so you have to pay close attention… the thank you is in the sky and the trees and the animals.. it’s there if we look! While earth day only happens once a year, we can start treating the earth like it’s having a birthday every day. I bet the earth would enjoy that just as much as we would (even if it won’t be eating cake and ice cream!)

Love, Kitterbugs!

Hello, fellow ecowarriors! We are so glad you’ve stopped by our page! We’d love to share some our favorite “green Easter” tips! We’ve put on our thinking caps (accompanied by a set of bunny ears, of course) to bring you some great ideas!

1. Write the Easter Bunny a note or ask your parents to. Ask the Bunny to please, please, please reuse his plastic easter eggs and grass (paper grass can be reused too). Also, We’d love it if he could use the same baskets for us that he used last year. If he doesn’t still have the basket, ask if he could please drop his goodies in a cute reusable grocery or canvas bag. Canvas bags are great and can be used for fun art projects later! :)

2. Here is a great link for eco friendly egg coloring: http://www.celebrategreen.net/blog/easter/eco-easter-eggs-to-dye-for

3. If you enjoy hard boiled eggs for Easter, please consider saving the shells and including them in your compost pile! Also, take this opportunity to try free-range, cage-free eggs if you haven’t already. Those chickens will thank you.

4. Remember to recycle plastic candy wrappers, whenever possible. Some wrappers can but cut up and used in art collages, too.

5. And the top, most important Green Easter tip ever: Never, ever, give a bunny (or any pet, for that matter) as a gift. A pet should not be given at holidays for various reasons. Also, ownership of a pet takes a lot of preparation and discussion. Should you desire a pet bunny around Easter time, give a photo of a bunny and then go as a family and make a responsible choice, based on your family and the bunny’s personality. Here’s another great link to learn more about bunnies and their care. http://family.go.com/parenting/article-ip-506149-bringing-home-the-easter-bunny–rabbits-as-pets-t/

Thanks for stopping by our blog!! Happy Hopping to you, our Kitterbug friends!!

Love, Jennifer (and her parents!)
